The illustrious Denver Broncos first hit the field in 1960 as charter members of the American Football League (AFL), then under the NFL after the 1970 merger. The Broncos' inaugural season was less than stellar; in fact, the team failed to have a winning season for its first 13 years as an NFL team. The team's first winning season was 1973, and four years later, in 1977, they made their first appearance in the playoffs, advancing all the way to Super Bowl XII.
Proving that slow starts mean little in the end, the Denver Broncos went on to become one of football's most successful teams, boasting an incredible 34 winning records in 40 seasons – a staggering 85%. 1983 to 1998 ushered in a new era of Denver dominance, with the legendary John Elway leading the team to an impressive seven division titles and 10 playoff appearances, but best of all, Elway's Broncos brought home back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1997 and then 1998.
Since 1998, the Broncos have continued their fight for division dominance, dreaming of once again recapturing Super Bowl glory. Elway, long since retired as an active player, has returned as the General Manager and Executive Vice President of Football Operations for his beloved Broncos, reenergizing the franchise and inspiring a whole new generation of players.
